Our house stands in the centre of Tostão, a small and quiet village resting among the mounts 7 km away from Vila Velha de Ródão.
This area is well-known for its natural beauty. It is inserted in Naturtejo Global Geopark, a Classified Area and UNESCO territory, rich in biodiversity of fauna and flora
When the Tejo river passes by Vila Velha de Ródão, flowing its way through the quartzitic mountains, creates a beautiful natural monument known as Portas de Ródão. This exquisite location is home for the biggest griffon vulture colony in the country, and a privileged area for fauna and birdlife investigation. In the river bed rests the Tejo Valley Rock Art Complex and in its river banks were discovered pre-historical traces of national interest. On one of the cliffs lays the Castelo de Ródão – or Castelo do Rei Wamba -, which origin can be traced back to the 7th century AC.
10 km away from Tostão, another river, the Ocreza, thrives in a wild landscape and opens a valley amongst the quartzitic slopes. This diverse geological landscape supports well preserved ecosystems and hosts bird of prey’s nests and a large fauna. Here have taken place ancient alluvial Roman gold exploration and there can still be found, alongside the right bank of the Ocreza, several subterranean galleries of unknown origin.
Arrival to Tostão is fairly simple.

We are a young couple with child. Sam, Catarina and baby Jade. Our main interests are permaculture and eco-building, which we try to apply at our own home at Tapada da Ribeira, where we live a slow, simple, handmade life.
We sometimes stay at Casa de Outrora, as does the owner of the property, Sam’s father.
